Eimear is a graduate of Film and Broadcasting with French from Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). After graduating in 2015, she spent a year working in the radio industry before applying for the Jameson graduate programme. In her first year, she was placed in Strasbourg, France and from there she moved to North U.K in second year, covering Newcastle and Scotland. Eimear is the current Jameson Brand Ambassador in London, also covering Brighton.
Throughout university, I worked with a promotional agency on different marketing campaigns, which really sparked my interest in brand activation and events. I had worked on several Jameson activations and loved working on the brand as it was cool, down to earth and unpretentious which I thought embodied Irish culture perfectly. When I heard about the graduate programme, it seemed like my dream job as it offered the opportunity to work with an international company, travel, meet new people and gain invaluable life experience – and that it has done! With the programme you grow both mentally and emotionally as you learn how to adapt to different cultures, be independent and use your initiative.
I started off in Strasbourg, France. When I look back at it now, I remember how daunting it was at the beginning as I had to adapt to a completely different culture and the spoken language is French so there was an initial language barrier. As challenging as it was at the beginning, I had an amazing year, learning how to speak French almost fluently, becoming a self-starter and being confident in the role as a brand ambassador. In my second year, I moved to Newcastle in the U.K and I looked after Scotland as well. This was an amazing opportunity as there had never been a Brand Ambassador up North before, so my work was cut out for me!
When I applied for the programme my level of French was average, but I can speak almost fluently now! I used it 90% of the time in my first year of market placement.
I think being outgoing is the most important thing about being a Brand Ambassador. You work independently a lot of the time, so you need to be comfortable with introducing yourself to new people and making new friends.
It would be the friends I have made and the people I have met while working in different markets.
When you first move to market it can be quite challenging as you don’t know anyone, and you must adapt to a new way of life. It takes a while to settle in and you do miss home and your family and friends.
There are many opportunities to meet new people and it allows you to build up your network. It also gives you an idea of what areas in the business you would like to progress in.
I have become more entrepreneurial and better at seeking opportunities. I’ve gained a lot of insight into the drinks industry and different roles in the business.
I like to travel and visit new cities. The benefit of the graduate programme is that you know someone in pretty much every city, so you can always rely on them to show you around. Myself and some of the other BA’s travelled to China this year, which was incredible.
Working on the launch of Skepta’s clothing brand, MAINS, with Jameson being the only drinks brand present at the event. That was unreal!
Be confident and be yourself in the video application. Make sure to include hobbies, interests and passions and put down any experience you have working in bars/ restaurants and promotional work. Chat to people who have been on the programme and get some insight into the role before applying.
